Having previously secured European women’s professional basketball supremacy by winning the prestigious EuroLeague Championship back in March, Candace Parker and her teammates Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Deanna Nolan have now led their Russian club UMMC Ekaterinburg to the Russian League title.
UMMC defeated WNBA Finals MVP Seimone Augustus and Spartak Moscow in three straight games to win the best-of-five series, culminating in an 84-68 Game 3 victory on April 27. Parker, the 6.4 ft silky smooth Los Angeles forward, dominated in UMMC’s 71-68 Game 1 victory over Spartak, scoring 22 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and recording three assists, steals and blocks. Taurasi, the dynamic Phoenix Mercury gunner, added 16 points and eight assists in the same game.
Taurasi then took center stage in UMMC’s 89-92 OT Game 2 win, scoring a team-high 22 points and dishing out five assists, while Parker posted 16 points and 11 rebounds. Deanna Nolan, a three-time WNBA Champion with the Shock, contributed 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Spartak Moscow was paced by Augustus, the Minnesota Lynx star, who led all scores in Game 2 with 4 points, and Candice Dupree, Taurasi’s Phoenix Mercury teammate, who combined for 26 points and 17 rebounds in the first two game of the best-of-series, which ended when UMMC completed the sweep with a 84-68 Game 3 victory. Candace Parker scored 14 points in the clincher, while Taurasi and Seattle Storm point guard Sue Bird each chipped in with 10 points.
Candace Parker wants it all, and seems to be getting it all. She juggles a basketball career in Russia and the WNBA, marriage to NBA’s Shelden Williams, and being a mom to little Lailaa, who travels with her each time mommy has to go to Russia.
